I was the wedding magician for Shiva and Conner at The Pipe Shop in North Vancouver, performing strolling close-up magic from the end of the ceremony right through to the speeches.
The room: The Pipe Shop, North Vancouver
The Pipe Shop is a 1940s pipefitters' building on the North Vancouver waterfront. Timber beams. Concrete floors. Festoon lights. Big factory windows full of fall colour.
It took a full day of setup the day before. When I walked in, there was a giant chess set on a green marble floor, a bar with flowers and disco balls built into the base, and cocktail tables ready for guests.
Alexa only works with the best
This wedding was quarterbacked by Alexa Gayton of DreamGroup Weddings + Events. DreamGroup has been planning weddings in Vancouver since 2004, which makes them one of the city's longest-running luxury planning teams.

My new favourite wedding format: cocktail hour into food stations
No sit-down dinner. Here's how the night flowed:
- Cocktail hour. Guests mingled around the cocktail tables while I performed.
- Dinner at food stations. The cocktail hour blended straight into dinner. Guests grabbed food from the stations and carried it back to their cocktail tables. Nobody got pulled away from the party, and the magic never stopped.
- Speeches. Everyone moved into the main room, which had been flipped just for speeches.
It was seamless. Dinner was amazing, but the night was never about sitting through dinner. Guests stay on their feet, conversations keep moving, and I can reach every group in the room.
I've performed at weddings where guests went seven hours without real food. At another, the catering ran late and dinner landed three hours behind schedule. Not here. The stations opened and the food kept coming. The salmon was a standout.
The planning team helped me find the groups I hadn't reached yet, like the older guests settled on the couches in the corner. That's the difference a great planner makes. Nobody gets missed.
The biggest reaction: three-card monte
My three-card monte was the banger of the night. I introduce it as a public service announcement. Find the Lady is a street game played all over the world, and it's a scam every time.
Then I show them why. Two cards, then three. The queen vanishes from a guest's hand while they're looking at me. I tell them I'm about to switch it, and they still miss it, because I did it ten seconds ago. Then I flip it and help them win. It ends with the queens and aces trading places in their hands.
Every time a group thinks they've caught up, there's another phase waiting. One guest asked why I hadn't robbed a bank yet. Another told me to go to Vegas.
The rest of the set
Strolling magic means every group gets its own little show. Here's what the night looked like:
- Coins across. Three US half dollars travel, one at a time, from my hand to a guest's. It's my favourite way to open.
- A card from the box. A chosen card rises out of the card box while a guest holds it. No electronics, no AI.
- A signed card that keeps coming back. It ends with the whole deck vanishing from a guest's hands, leaving only their card.
- Mind reading. Guests think of any celebrity. Drake, Bob Dylan, James Hetfield, Harrison Ford. Then they find out I already knew.
- A borrowed ring on a string. Tied on with a double knot. Then it's gone.
The bride got a show too
Shiva didn't just watch. She got in on the magic too.
The best moment: the anniversary card
The best magic isn't always the loudest.
Just before dinner, I found Shiva and Conner. Each signed a card. On one card, the date of their first date. On the other, today's date. Then I asked them to hold the cards together, just like the two of them coming together on their wedding day.
Three, two, one. Two cards became one. Their first date on one side, their wedding date on the other.
That card is an impossible object, and it went straight into their guest book.
Long after the cake is gone, that card will still be in the guest book.

- The chess floor. Houle Games brought the giant chess set, and InStyle Floor Wraps laid the green marble checkerboard underneath it.
- The food. Railtown Catering ran the stations, and it was amazing. The stations are what make this format work.
- The wine. Gail King poured for CheckMate Winery, the Okanagan winery known for Canada's first 100-point table wine.
- The cake. To Live For is a fully plant-based bakery in East Vancouver.
- The music. A string quartet, a looping artist and a DJ. Three acts in one night.
