Hotel staff don't get a December. While every other company in the city is closing out the year at its own office party, hotel teams are running someone else's, banquet after banquet, straight through to New Year's. So when a hotel finally throws a party for its own people, it usually gets pushed to January or February. And it usually goes bigger than almost anything else on the calendar, because it's the one night the room belongs to them.
I've now done that room for three hotel brands. Here's what actually happened.
It started with the Empress
Fairmont Empress in Victoria booked me for their annual staff gala in February 2025, 300 guests. The email that came back the next day is the reason this case study exists at all:

"Hello Kel, thank you so much, it was great to connect yesterday, appreciate your quick turnaround! We definitely want to go ahead! The team at the Empress said they absolutely loved having u there!"
That's Nicky Fourie, Fairmont's Regional Director. It's also why there's a second Fairmont property in this story.
Then January 2026 turned into a run of three
Ten days, three hotels, three staff parties, back to back.
Hyatt Regency Vancouver — Corporate Annual Awards, 250 guests

Two gigs, one weekend, and I was back at the Hyatt Regency for round two: four back-to-back sets in a single night for their Corporate Annual Awards. Dark room, loud music, no stage lights, no perfect conditions, just close-up magic straight into people's hands while the room kept moving. That's the harder version of the job, and it's also where the best reactions happen, table by table, group by group.
The Westin Whistler — Staff Celebration Party, 250 guests

This one's logged in the booking system exactly as what it was: a Staff Celebration Party. Whistler mountain views, a show-themed room, and a guest list made up entirely of the people who spend the rest of the year making other people's stays feel effortless.
In magic, the rule is simple: the less the audience sees of the work, the better the job's been done. Hospitality runs on the same rule. Guests never see the late nights, the resets, the quiet chaos behind the curtain, they just feel it in every moment. That night, the people who create that feeling every day got to be the audience instead.
The room agreed it worked. The Westin comped an extra night's stay, breakfast the next morning, and a small gift on top of the fee, the kind of thing a venue does when a night actually lands, not because anyone asked for it. Karen Bauckham, who booked the night, put it simply afterward: "And you Kelvin, thank you. Was a wonderful event!"
Fairmont Hotel Vancouver — Annual Gala, 600 guests, "Crimson After Dark"
The biggest room of the run, and Fairmont's second call. A full production: live quartet, DJ and cold sparks, floral and décor, a 360 photo booth, content creators working the floor. I closed the night on close-up and tarot alongside a live band, and Nicky Fourie was back the next morning with this:
"You were Amazing Kel, the team really enjoyed the show, we got some great video footage! I especially enjoyed your up close magic!! We will definitely stay in touch for future events!"
Why a hotel's own staff party is a different brief
A hospitality crowd has seen every kind of spectacle a hotel can put on. Ice sculptures, live bands, full theatrical productions, they've set up for all of it, for other people. What they haven't had is something done to them, in their hands, with nowhere to hide and no job to do. That's what close-up magic gives a room like this that a stage show alone doesn't: no distance, no "audience," just a deck of cards and a genuine reaction from someone whose job is usually to make sure everyone else has one.
Four nights, three hotel brands, one relationship with Fairmont that's now two years and two properties deep. If your team spends the season running everyone else's event, that's exactly the gap this fills.
Frequently asked questions
Do you perform for a hotel's own internal staff events, not just events held at a hotel?
Yes, and it's a different job from working a client's event at a hotel venue. Fairmont Empress, Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, Hyatt Regency Vancouver, and the Westin Whistler have all booked Kel Modern Magic to entertain their own teams, not a client's guests.
When do hotels usually book their own staff party?
Almost always outside the holiday season itself. December is fully committed to client events, so a hotel's own celebration typically lands in January or February, once the season's bookings are done.
What's different about entertaining a hospitality crowd versus a typical corporate audience?
A hospitality crowd has seen every form of event production there is, they just haven't had a night off from running it. Close-up magic works because it's the one thing in the room that isn't a show they're watching, it's happening in their own hands.
Can you work multiple properties for the same hotel group?
Yes. Fairmont has booked two separate properties in the past two years, Fairmont Empress in Victoria and Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, through the same regional contact.
